While nothing beats your natural teeth, if you’ve lost several of your teeth, or all of them, it’s important that you fill in the gap with dentures, both for functional and cosmetic reasons.

First, it stands to reason that missing teeth present more than just an aesthetic concern. Your teeth are critical for nutrition and speaking. But what many people don’t know is that if you’re missing several teeth in one area, it can have an effect on your existing teeth, causing them to shift and loosen without the support of their neighbors.

Aesthetically speaking, while a gap-toothed grin in a child is nothing short of adorable, the same can’t be said for adults. Missing teeth can be a sign of poor health and mars your otherwise great smile in significant ways.

What types of dentures are available?

Dr. Brar offers two types of dentures at her practice:

Partial dentures

If you’re missing several teeth in a row, partial dentures fill the gap, providing a seamless line of teeth. Partial dentures attach to your teeth with clasps on either side and you can remove them for cleaning. To ensure that your partial dentures stay in place, Dr. Brar recommends placing an abutment on each side to better hold the dentures without compromising your existing teeth.

Complete dentures

If you’re missing all of your teeth on either your upper or lower jaw (or both), full dentures are your best option. These dentures fit snugly over your gums and come with beautiful prosthetic teeth that hold up well for chewing and speaking. These dentures can be held in place by a bonding agent or with implants, which are integrated into your jawbone. You can remove complete dentures for cleaning.

To help you figure out which options are best for your situation, it’s best to sit down and discuss your goals with Dr. Brar.

How long do dentures last?

There’s no blanket answer to this question because it depends entirely upon how you use and care for your dentures. With the right care and handling, including thorough cleaning, your dentures can last for years.

If they break, Dr. Brar helps you repair them or gets new ones, so that your smile doesn’t skip a beat.
